IN recognition of its efforts in raising much needed funds for the Stroke Foundation, not-for-profit organisation Tasmania Iconic Walks has been awarded the Eastern Shore Sun Advertising Award at the 2018 Business East Awards.
By blending an enchanting and challenging wilderness hike from Tasman Arch to Fortescue Bay, Tasmanian Iconic Walks founder Jo Cordell-Cooper said she suspected the participants would embrace the fundraising requirement of the event.
Ms Cordell-Cooper, in addition to her personal training business, runs the not-for-profit organisation from her home in Geilston Bay with a board of five directors, who are all some way intimately affected by stroke.
“We were totally blown away by the level of interest in our event,” Ms Cordell-Cooper said.
“Not only did we have 18 teams of four sign up for our inaugural event, some of them got really competitive around the fundraising knowing that 100 per cent of their fundraising would go to the Stroke Foundation.”
Each team was required to raise a total of $1000 – just $250 each – and the inaugural event held earlier this year raised almost $28,000 for the Stroke Foundation.
While fundraising to assist stroke survivors is a great cause, Tasmanian Iconic Walks also educates participants about the value of reducing the risk factor for stroke while enjoying nature with friends.
“The second highest risk factor for stroke is low levels of physical exercise – high blood pressure is number one – so when people sign up to go on this walk they understand it is a 17 kilometre, seven to eight-hour adventure,” Ms Cordell-Cooper said.
“They have to prepare for it over a few months and are consequently addressing their own risk factors.
“We appeal to the adventure that is within so many of us – the taking on of a big physical goal and training to be fit enough to really thrive on the day.
“Additionally, we have created fitness training resources, so for those who really don’t know where to start to be fit enough for such a long event, we help you.
“We have video resources as well as articles to get you fit and healthy on the day.”
