Sorell School: A proud history and an exciting future

AS a principal, I believe schools should put learners first.

Schools should also be beautiful, inside and out, and they should develop a strong sense of aspiration and pride across their communities.

Sorell School has played a significant role in the area for more than 200 years.

Individuals, families and groups have all benefited from the school over this time.

However, it has become clear that a revitalisation is needed.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $25 million that will see a complete redevelopment of Sorell School over the next few years.

This will include a combination of new buildings and refurbishment of existing facilities, with works expected to commence in 2020.

The redevelopment will provide great outcomes for local families in what is one of Tasmania’s fastest growing areas.

The new school will transform the space and provide state-of-the-art learning facilities.

I passionately believe that our learners and our families deserve this.

As part of a growing region, I’m hoping we can all work together to create a centre of educational excellence for future learners.

I’m working with current staff and students to provide an educational brief that will help guide some of the teaching and learning designs.

The Department of Education has also launched the ‘Get Involved’ campaign, so groups and individuals from the area can share their ideas and vision for the school and how it can connect with the community.

We are at the beginning of an exciting and seminal period in Sorell School’s long and proud history.

With this significant redevelopment, we look forward to growing our partnerships with families, businesses and organisations already linked to our school and to welcoming new families into our community.

I encourage the broader community to ‘Get Involved’ and share their ideas and vision for this important project.

A range of consultation channels will be available over the next six weeks, including an online survey, a community workshop, shopping centre information stalls, presentations, meetings, direct mail-out, social media and advertising.
