THE Risdon Brook Radio Yacht Club (RBRYC) will soon be playing host to the annual International One Metre State Championship from 14-15 November.
Held annually at Risdon Brook Park, this year’s event is expected to attract between 15 to 20 entrants who will test their skills against radio yachters from across Tasmania over the two-day series.
RBRYC secretary Andrew Wardrop said the International One Metre (IOM) class was the largest radio controlled (R/C) sailing class in the world, with sailing numbers in Australia reaching up to 2000 participants.
“It is a restricted rule class and is usually built for fibre glass and one-metre long radio yachts,” he said.
“The sail area and overall dimensions of the yacht are rule controlled, but the hulls can be of various designs.
“To compete in the State Championship competitors must have a registered IOM yacht and a number of our members have already bought new boats this year from top international builders in the latest designs.”
Mr Wardrop said competitors would face-off for “bragging rights”, as well as in preparation for the National IOM Championships to be help on the mainland later this year.
“In 2017, RBRYC will also be hosting the Australian Radio Yachting Association (ARYA) Championships,” he said.
“This event will attract around 100 entries from around Australia and will involve four different classes of R/C yacht.
“This event is held by the club every five-years, with racing conducted over a five-day period.”
Currently celebrating 43-years running at ‘The Brook’, the RBRYC races international class radio yachts and caters for new and novice skippers of all ages, with experienced skipper mentoring available.
Mr Wardop said the club attracted a number of older ex-sailors who found big yacht sailing too physically challenging.
“Joining RBRYC allows them to continue to indulge their passion for sailing and yachts, as well as having a continued connection with like-minded people,” he said.
