EASTERN Shore martial arts school Undefeatd recently had its Miraculous Ladybugs program participate in the Hobart Christmas Pageant to allow the girls to showcase what they have learnt.
Undefeatd is a martial arts school in Bellerive that teaches girls resilience and empowerment through the modern-day martial art form of Wing Chun Kung Fu – a system that does not rely on strength.
Instructor Nicola Francis holds fun and energetic classes for six to 12-year-olds using the cartoon character Ladybug, from the Miraculous television series, as the mascot due to her strong, independent, warm, funny and caring personality being something that the girls can aspire to.
Ms Francis said the Undefeatd Miraculous Ladybugs had been running since June 2019 and was providing the girls with the values they needed to be the best person they could.
“Life can be like a roller coaster and we want the girls to have the strength, courage and power to celebrate those great times in life,” she said.
“Having grit and determination to keep going and not give up are key aspects of my program.”
Along with making new friends and showing respect for each other, Ms Francis said the girls also gained confidence and self-esteem, which they were able to demonstrate in front of a large crowd at the Hobart Christmas Pageant.
“The Hobart Christmas Pageant is a large community event and it is a wonderful event to be a part of – the girls are little superheroes in my eyes,” she said.
The Undefeatd Miraculous Ladybugs also demonstrated their self-discipline and various self-defence techniques to parents and family members at a ‘Show Your Skill Day’ on 11 November.
For their hard work and perseverance, the girls were rewarded with a white sash, their first Kung Fu sash.
The girls are now required to wear the sash as part of their uniform.
Ten-year-old Rosie Chasemore has been part of the program since it began and said she had learnt a number of different skills.
“I’ve learnt self-defence, confidence, flexibility, discipline and have got to meet new people,” she said.
“I think that more girls should join Undefeatd, as it gives girls the chance to learn Kung Fu.”
Undefeatd is run at the St Mark’s Hall in Bellerive on Monday from 4.15pm to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 10.45am.
Classes for teenagers and women are also available.
