Free exercise program goes from ‘Strength2Strength’

EASTERN Shore residents over the age of 60 will have the chance to improve their health through supported physical activity thanks to a new program run by Care Forward.

Delivered in partnership with Primary Health Tasmania, the free 12-week Strength2Strength program (which started on 30 March) includes individually tailored exercise programs to improve the health of participants by reducing the impact of chronic health conditions.

Joe Towns, the managing director of Care Forward, Rosny Park, said Strength2Strength was an innovative initiative that coupled individual exercise programs with education in areas such as nutrition and lifestyle.

“The program aims to increase wellbeing in Australia’s most rapidly ageing population – Tasmania,” he said.

“Anyone can benefit from the assistance of this program, including those with long-term health conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, Parkinson’s, diabetes, chronic pain, mental health issues and respiratory issues.

“Strength training can also help in the prevention and management of diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, heart disease and a wide range of other chronic conditions that affect many Tasmanians.”

Primarily focused on strength-based exercise, the program assists clients with muscular development, as well as improved cardiovascular conditioning, balance and stability.

Care Forward accredited exercise physiologist Cameron Treloar said participants could achieve “fantastic improvements” in health, confidence and overall quality of life.

“The program aims to reduce hospital re-admissions and enhance patient self-management and post-hospitalisation outcomes,” he said.

“Supporting patients of all abilities, Strength2Strength provides individual programs undertaken in a supervised group setting, which not only provides a great exercise environment, but a supportive and socially interactive one as well.

“A key part of the program is also providing the participants with a home exercise program to maintain and achieve ongoing progress following the 12-weeks.”
