EASTSIDE Lutheran College has been crowned ‘King of all Garage Sales’ in Tasmania as part of the recent Garage Sale Trail event that was held across the nation in late October.
This year’s Garage Sale Trail was held over the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October with 400,000 Australians participating.
There were 18,000 garage sale events held over that weekend, where more than four million items were set free from cupboards, garages and sheds across the country.
In the Eastern Shore community, Garage Sale Trail was made possible thanks to support from Clarence City Council.
“The King of All Garage Sales is a search for Australia’s most awesome garage sale and recognising the wonderful sellers behind them,” Garage Sale Trail co-founder Darryl Nichols said.
Eastside Lutheran College teacher Rosemary Kennedy said as part of the school’s sustainability unit, the year three, four and five classes collected unwanted treasures to sell.
“Our class has been instrumental in developing a recycling program at the College and recently received a Silver Environmental Sustainability Award from Business East,” she said.
“The money we raised at the Garage Sale Trail and the money we won will be used to purchase two Replas recycled plastic benches, showing the students one of the many ways our soft plastic waste is repurposed.”
Prize money to the value of $500 was awarded to Eastside Lutheran College as part of its win.
Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said Council was proud of what Eastside Lutheran College had achieved.
“It was encouraging to see an additional 20 individual sales in Clarence this year for the event, demonstrating an increasing commitment to reuse in our city,” he said.
Powered by 150 local councils, Garage Sale Trail encourages reuse, celebrates creativity and connects communities in a fun and social way.
Next year’s Garage Sale Trail will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October 2019.
