GUIDE Dogs Tasmania is asking the community to turn the lights off and “dine in the dark” during April and May as part of its new fundraising campaign.
Dining in the Dark is all about experiencing what it might be like to dine with little or no vision.
People are encouraged to host a dinner party with part or all of the meal under blindfold, by candlelight or with the lights out.
Guests are asked to donate what they might have spent on a night out to Guide Dogs Tasmania, which hopes to raise $50,000 through the campaign.
Guide Dogs Tasmania community fundraising coordinator Kristy Wright said Dining in the Dark was about raising funds and awareness, but also having a whole lot of fun.
“Dining in the Dark is about getting together with your friends, family or work colleagues to test out your tastebuds, while at the same time appreciating the fact that not all Tasmanians can simply rely on their sight to give them information about things they come across in their day-to-day life,” she said.
“Ultimately, our goal is to raise vital funds for our Guide Dog puppies, so they can become future heroes for Tasmanians who need them.”
Each Guide Dog puppy will cost the organisation more than $35,000 by the time it’s in its working harness, ready to be matched with a Tasmanian who is blind or vision impaired.
The charity relies on donations from the community to continue placing Guide Dogs.
“These dogs are life changing for the people they end up with, giving them independence, safety, confidence and companionship,” Ms Wright said.
“Dining in the Dark is an opportunity for people to be part of a Guide Dog puppy’s journey and make a difference to someone’s life.”
With the support from local businesses, Guide Dogs Tasmania is offering some amazing prizes for those who raise the most funds through their Dining in the Dark event.
Woodbridge Hill Hideaway, Pennicott Wilderness Journeys, Frogmore Creek and Tassal all contributed to the prize pool.
