Derwent Storms building stocks for national and world competition

TASMANIA’s premier dragon boat club is scouting for talent for a master’s squad which will compete in interstate and overseas competitions.

The Lindisfarne-based Derwent Storms Dragon Boat Club has been on the water for 11 years and has won back-to-back national gold medals in the past.

The club will need to maintain its momentum to qualify for the World Dragon Boat Titles in France 2020.

Head coach Alison Mourant said building on an already successful base had ensured the club performed at peak level and retained its high-profile interstate.

“The Derwent Storms has come from obscurity to be a real force at interstate competition and we want to maintain that very enviable position,” she said.

“That means building our membership in the 40 plus age group to provide a pool of new paddlers to build on our successes.

“Dragon boat paddling is a demanding sport and it appeals to a variety of people, many of whom have played elite sport but have retired prematurely due to injury.

“It’s a challenge to master the technique and get boat fit but the results are worth it from a personal and a crew perspective.”

Ms Mourant said Derwent Storms would be hosting come and try sessions in October and although anyone was welcome, novice paddlers aged between 40 and 55 would be most welcome.

“There is a misconception that dragon boat paddling is a sport only for women recovering from breast cancer,” she said.

“Derwent Storms is focused on sports paddling and we have a strong squad of male paddlers aged from their mid-20s to older than 60.

“Ideally we would like to consolidate our men’s squad to boat competitive crews in all age groups.

“Our goal is to qualify to send a mixed men’s and women’s crew to France in two years.

“We will be working very hard over the next two seasons and would welcome new members of all ages at all levels.”

Come and try sessions will be held at 10am on 13, 20 and 27 October at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania, Ford Parade, Lindisfarne.
