Clarence gymnasts head to national championships

IN a club record, five girls from Clarence Gymsports have represented Tasmania at the 2018 Australian Gymnastics Championships.

The team included Charlotte Barnes, Charlotte Bouwmeester-Wedd, Katie Ryan, Hallee Sheen and Talia Swards.

For all five gymnasts, it was their first time competing at the championships.

“All of the girls were extremely happy to have made the team, you couldn’t have wiped the smiles off their faces if you tried,” coach Bridget Henwood said.

The girls have trained for 13 hours every week since being selected in April.

Ms Henwood said it was an “amazing effort” for the club to have made up most of the Level 7 state team.

“The competition at Level 7 was very tough for the girls but was a great learning experience for their first Australian Championships,” she said.

“I think for the girls to see the gymnasts from other states and territories and the standard at which they perform at was definitely a highlight, particularly watching those gymnasts who are in a higher level than they are.

“Gymnasts who go away and see these things always come back more inspired and wanting to work harder at training, and this has certainly been the case for these girls.

“They are all currently working to upgrade their level of skill to make them more competitive in the future and to look to be able to compete at the next level.”
