IT’S nothing but smooth bowling at Cremorne Bowls and Community Club following the opening of a brand new $160,000 synthetic green.
The new green, which was installed with the assistance of $80,000 in funding from the Liberal Government, replaced the 24-year-old green and was officially opened by Liberal Member for Franklin Nic Street in late December.
Cremorne Bowls and Community Club president Don McVilly said the club had come a long way since it began in 1965.
“The first club consisted of a small weatherboard club house, which is currently used as a storage shed, and only offered four rinks to play on,” he said.
“Due to a tremendous amount of voluntary work and fundraising by members, bowlers and friends over the past 52-years, we now have a club house to be proud of, a car park and an eight rink green.”
Mr McVilly said the club was lucky to learn in late 2016 that it had been successful in its application for $80,000 in funding, which covered just under half of the cost of replacing the aging green.
“We were very fortunate that the green outlived its original use-by-date by several years and it served us well,” he said.
“Cremorne bowlers were able to manage the conditions, but visiting bowls teams found the fast surface not easy to deal with.
“Several members of the club travelled around the state looking at other clubs’ artificial greens before choosing the one we believed is the best on the market.
“It took about three-and-a-half weeks from the commencement of laying the green to the finish and the club and its members couldn’t be happier with the new green.
“It has improved the ambience of the club and always gets good comments from opposing teams.”
The new green has already seen the club welcome additional members, as well as field another team in its Sunday pennant.
In addition to having four pennant teams playing on a Saturday, a men’s team on Wednesday and women’s team on Thursday, the club also runs a barefoot program every Thursday evening during summer and indoor and social bowls Tuesdays and Saturdays during the winter months.
