THE works of 118 Tasmanian painters, photographers, drawers, printmakers and mixed media artists are on display to the public at the City of Clarence Open Art Exhibition.
Held at the Rosny Farm, this year’s exhibition showcases an array of portraits, landscape and abstract works with many artists choosing to push the envelope with bold and vivid colours.
The overall winner of the competition was Martin Rek, whose drawing “Melaleuca” outshone more than 200 entries.
Mr Rek’s “precise use of the medium” was said to be a highlight for the judging panel, which comprised artist and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery guide Jan Peacock and art academic and curator Jane Deeth.
Ms Peacock and Ms Deeth noted that through the “exquisite control of a very difficult medium”, Mr Rek “managed very successfully to describe a complex and daunting landscape in a very intense and detailed way, while simultaneously keeping the image fresh, alive and vibrant”.
Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said it was always exciting to see the work of Tasmanian artists, particularly those in Clarence, on show to the public during the exhibition.
“Clarence City Council actively encourages participation of people in the arts through a number of initiatives in our arts and events program,” he said.
“The Open Art Exhibition is a valuable opportunity for artists to show their work in public and hopefully encourages them to continue to pursue their passion.
“It is also wonderful for our community and visitors to see those talents on display at the Rosny Farm.”
The winner of the Mayor’s Award was Laraine O’Donnell for her work, “Indigenous Billabong Girl”.
Section winners were Emily Jones for her painting, “The Florentine Model”, Susan Mace in the field of photography for “The Leyland”, Steph Houstein in printmaking for “Bonescape 103” and in the drawing category, Carissa Goyer took home first place for her work, “Saddle Up”.
The exhibition is on show until Sunday 21 August at the Rosny Farm.
