SUSTAINABLE Living Tasmania has teamed up with a number of southern councils to launch a new program allowing for the bulk buy of energy-efficient products.
Products chosen for the Home Energy Bulk Buy will be based on quality, price and performance and include such items as energy-efficient heat pumps, hot water services, insulation, LED lighting and solar panels.
Sustainable Living Tasmania’s executive officer Todd Houstein said buying in bulk brought down the cost per item, allowing for a cheaper price compared to buying on your own.
He said the Home Energy Bulk Buy would also ensure the product was installed in a way that maximised savings.
“While there has been previous bulk-buy programs for solar panels and heat pumps, this is the first time such a wide range of energy saving measures has been bulk purchased across such a wide area of Tasmania,” he said.
“Homeowners, local governments, businesses and the community are coming together to drive a big reduction in energy use and our carbon footprint.
“By working together, we’re making household sustainability more accessible and do-able for people.”
Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey, who is Chair of the Southern Tasmanian Council’s Authority (STCA), said the authority was “thrilled” to be working with Sustainable Living Tasmania.
“This is the biggest bulk buy partnership for the state and we are bringing all of southern Tasmania’s council’s together to bulk buy the best available range of energy-saving products and services ever,” she said.
“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is cheaper and easier when you use the power of bulk-buying equipment and services.
“We wanted to help homeowners reduce their energy use and we knew if enough homes did this, there would be a big sustainability benefit.
“So we’re reaching out to all southern Tasmanian councils to create this extraordinary opportunity for people to make their homes energy efficient.”
The first offer will be available in October for a limited period, with other offers to follow.
The offer groupings will include heat pumps – product and installation – insulation and LED lighting, solar PV rooftop panels, hot water systems (solar and heat pump hot water) and batteries for storing solar power.
The bulk-buy program is available at the same time as the TEELS three-year interest free loans of up to $10,000 per household.
It is accessible to homeowners in the following local government areas: Brighton Council, Central Highlands Council, Clarence City Council, Derwent Valley Council, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, Glenorchy City Council, Hobart City Council, Huon Valley Council, Kingborough Council, Sorell Council, Southern Midlands Council and Tasman Council.

The community bulk-buy program is funded by the Southern Tasmanian Council’s Authority.
