Local photographer bags top award

LINDISFARNE photographer Ian Wallace has pocketed the title of Tasmania’s best professional documentary photographer for 2017.

Mr Wallace took out the title of 2017 AIPP TAS Documentary Photographer of the Year at the 2017 AIPP TAS Epson Professional Photography Awards – Australia’s largest and most prestigious awards for professional print photography.

Mr Wallace said the beauty of our environment “transcended politics” and we should be doing everything we could to help protect, maintain and enjoy it.

“For whatever reason, we must acknowledge that our world is changing and I believe now, more than ever, we need to celebrate and respect the wonder of Mother Nature,” he said.

“I love taking photographs of a world that not many people get to adventure in.

“The temperate waters of Tasmania can be breathtaking and full of interesting marine life.”

Sponsored by Epson, the awards are run annually in every state by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

AIPP national president Vittorio Natoli said the awards represented the best of the best of professional photography in Australia.

“The AIPP awards are a celebration of photographic excellence and represent the pinnacle of professional photography,” he said.

Doing what he loved was the secret to his success, Mr Wallace said.

“They say that if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life – I have spent my life finding things that I love to do, doing them as much as I can and then learning how to do them as well as possible,” he said.

A panel of experts anonymously judged all the images entered into the awards across various categories.

Innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact were the key criteria by which the images were assessed.

The state awards act as a stepping-stone to the country’s largest national awards for professional print photography – The Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs).

State awards entrants must receive 80 points or above for at least two of their images to be eligible for the APPAs.
