Rosny students can’t stop the beat

ROSNY College is gearing up for its 19th annual musical, this year taking on the vibrant and exciting story of one girl’s inspiring dream to dance and fight for human rights.

Musical director Darren Sangwell said Rosny College was proud to be presenting ‘Hairspray’, which had a timely and beautiful message of progress that was as important now and it was in the 1960s.

“Tackling a production with the challenging themes of racism, body image and conformity, as well as celebrating difference and inclusion, has opened the minds of our cast – and hopefully our audiences – to cultural identity and fairness” he said.

“We hope to take our audiences back to the vibrant 1960s, to the challenges of western societies’ norms and of growing up in a changing world where standing up for others is the right thing to do.”

Production manager Clare Latham said the Rosny College musical production took place each year to give students real life theatre experience in every area of production.

“Our students are learning ‘on-the-job’ how the musical theatre industry works,” she said.

“We have an all student cast, crew, costume team and even the majority of the band, showcasing what Rosny College has to offer as the only senior secondary college on the Eastern Shore.”

This year, the Rosny students are being mentored by some of Hobart’s theatrical elite, including Errol Award nominated director Darren Sangwell, musical director Suze Ellis, Errol Award winner Kristy Baker, production manager Clare Latham and designer Maddie Smith – all of which are ex-Rosny students themselves.

Rosny College will be presenting Hairspray at the Dwight Brown Auditorium (Rosny College) for six evening performances and one matinee on the 18, 19, 20 and 25, 26 and 27 May.

The show will start at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased in-store at Centertainment, by phoning 6234 5998 or online at www.centertainment.com.au.
