Local veteran joins Targa Tasmania team

LINDISFARNE resident Ricky Pfieffer took up the wheel in the ultimate motorsport challenge recently when he joined fellow Mates4Mates team members in the iconic Targa Tasmania.

Acting as a member of the team’s support staff, Mr Pfieffer was in charge of taking photographs and documenting all the behind-the-scenes action throughout the event in late April.

Mr Pfieffer said he had always been interested in motorsports and had jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the iconic Tasmanian event.

“I absolutely loved being a part of the event – taking on the role of photojournalist, documenting the whole team experience and meeting so many new people,” he said.

“Being involved in an event that requires such teamwork also brought back memories of the strong friendships and lasting bonds you build in a military environment.

“I would without a doubt do this again and already have plans underway to participate again in the future.”

The six-day tarmac experience was part of a program supported by Mates4Mates though the Adventure Challenges service.

The program is aimed at helping veterans step out of their comfort zone and increase their confidence.

Mates4Mates Tasmania manager Stephen Knox said that participating in the racing event helped veterans to build individual skills and emphasised the importance of teamwork.

“These guys rallied and worked together to ensure they overcame any challenges and finished the race,” he said.

“It’s important that veterans have access to opportunities like this, as it contributes to their recovery when they transition from Defence.”

Mates4Mates driver Kim Ewart said the team worked extremely well together and that the race was a “once in a lifetime” experience.

“It’s been great to partner with Mates4Mates to help our veterans,” he said.

“As a veteran myself, it’s a cause that means a lot to me and I’ve really enjoyed getting to work with the team to complete this challenge.”

Mates4Mates supports current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members and their families who are wounded, injured or ill as a result of their service.
