MIDWAY Point’s ALAN Peacocke, celebrated his 100th birthday with friends and family at a special birthday party held at the Sorell Providore last month.
Mr Peacocke was surrounded by family and friends who came to help him celebrate his milestone birthday, with several close friends from Lewisham, Western Australia and New Zealand travelling the distance to attend the special event. Born in Maylands, Western Australia, Mr Peacocke worked in the Wheatbelt region before joining the army in December 1940. He was enlisted in the 2/28 Battalion AIF that saw him embark for the Middle East in January 1941. In July 1942 he returned to Australia by hospital ship and was later discharged from the army in 1946 due to health reasons.
Mr Peacocke took up residency in Tasmania where he occupied a position in the Prices Commission and was soon transferred to the Repatriation Department (now the Department of Veteran Affairs) within in which he served for the following 30 years.
During that time Mr Peacocke was associated with numerous clubs and societies in Hobart and Sorell. He was a dedicated member of the Causeway Club, the Midway Progress Association Foundation, and the Sorell Garden Club. An avid gardener and over the years his prized home garden in Midway Point won him a number of prizes.
When Mr Peacocke purchased land in Midway Point in 1955 there were only seven houses standing and most of the area was covered by Tea Tree and saltbush.
