Scouts tackle local cleanup

A GROUP of enthusiastic members of the Howrah Scout Group conducted a clean up of Pindos Park in Tranmere recently.

The volunteer group, made up of members of the Joeys (ages six to eight), Cubs (ages eight to 11) and Scouts (ages 11 to 15), got stuck into cleaning their local environment as part of Clean up Australia Day.

The Clean Up initiative is aimed at fostering a direct connection between the children their environmental and community responsibilities.

The day also assisted the Cubs in their work towards attaining their ‘boomerang badges’. As a component of the boomerang badges focuses on the natural environment, the group discussed important issues such as recycling, pollution and habitat destruction.

“It was pleasing to note this time around that the amount of litter collected was less than we expected,” said Howrah Scout Group committee member Sonya Abbott.

“In previous clean ups we usually have a whole trailer load of litter removed!” she said.

The Howrah Scout Group conducts between two and three clean up days at Pindos Park throughout the year.

The event’s success is testament to the continued dedication and commitment of the Scout group leaders. Not only do the leaders motivate the children to achieve their goals, they encourage them to have a lot of fun along the way.
