HAPKA’S PIZZA HOUSE, 316 East Derwent Highway 6243 5844
A FRIEND was over for dinner, so I called up Hapka’s for a home delivery pizza. Aimed at the Gourmet Favourites part of the menu and we decided to have the large Grecian pizza which was covered in chicken, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, zucchini, tomato, garlic and oregano. It was delicious. The zucchini was crisped up and didn’t fall to bits which is rare in a pizza oven. They also have the ultimate ‘blow out your arteries’ cheese lovers pizza which has mozzarella, cheddar, fetta, camembert and brie topped with a touch of ricotta – and the antidote – the veggie patch – a heap of veggies served up with fetta! The pizzas are all well priced with a lot of specials if you have seen the leaflets that have been letter-boxed on the Eastern Shore. They also have the standard favourites – tropical, Aussie etc. There are lots of specials – just ring them up and ask about the delivery specials. Worth a look!
SAILS ON THE WATERFRONT, 4 Cambridge Road, Bellerive 6244 2333
HAD two meals at Sails over the break – one with the Aquarium Queen, and one with a far sillier friend who shall remain nameless! I ordered the in-house seafood chowder on one occasion, and it turned out to be a delight. Nice to see Sails going back to its kitchen goodies. On the other two occasions the marinated chicken breast on ratatouille with wilted spinach and roast potatoes was chosen, and one was the crumbed lamb cutlets with creamy garlic potato whip, steamed greens and red wine jus. The views are just stunning – have to love Bellerive.
SUWAN THAI, Level 2, Galleria, 33 Salamanca Place 6224 4618
THIS place is a right find. Lunches Thursday to Saturday, it’s really value for money. Nothing over $12.90 which includes seafood, chicken, beef and vegetarian meals. On two recent visits, the Caesar Queen has opted for the Pad Thai of fried noodles with beanshoots, the Friday Junior has ordered the fried rice with chicken, and I ordered the fried rice with King prawns. The meals were delicious. You can sit out in the gallery or downstairs in the restaurant. On a subsequent visit we aimed for the goong gratiam – stir fried prawns with garlic and pepper and gai yang – crilled chicken with special herbs served with sweet chilli and a side salad. This place should be filled to overflowing. It’s also open at night for dinner seven days a week. The staff are great. The takeaway menu has a heap of information – you can grab a copy at the door. And there is a specials board in the restaurant if nothing grabs you on the menu (but I would find that hard to believe).
CHILLIES, 5 Gregory Street, Sandy Bay 6223 6648
THE Caesar Queen, Friday Junior and I went to a very cheap lunch at this restaurant (licensed) tucked away behind Gay Flowers in Gregory Street. I arrived first and pre-ordered. The mixed tandoori platter for two is exceptionally good value (as a takeaway it is only $16.50). It comes with tasty bites of chicken tikka, seek kebab, lamb tikka, and it was delicious. We also had the tandoori chicken, some naan bread, and it was all served by a delightful young man from Nepal. The chef also serves up some wonderful pickles, mango, lime or mixed. There’s complimentary pappadams on arrival, too. Lunch is served Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon till 2.30 p.m., and dinner is seven nights a week from 5 pm till 10 pm. The dine in or takeaway lunch special of rice, q curry and pappadam and naan is only $8 or $7 for students with production of a student card. As well as fully licensed, you can BYO bottled wine. A great find in Sandy Bay.
